Explore and examine the issues surrounding extremism

64 - Radicalisation and Terrorism

Radicalisation and Terrorism
Teacher's Handbook
By Alison Jamieson & Jane Flint

“There is nothing like this available today. No school addressing these issues should be without it.”

Conor Gearty, Director of Institute of Public Affairs and Professor of Human Rights Law, London School of Economics

A teacher's handbook for addressing extremism.
This practical handbook provides a reliable and objective resource to enable teachers to tackle the complex subjects of terrorism and radicalisation. It covers issues of citizenship, human rights and respect, civil and political engagement, the nature of identity and how we identify with others.

The handbook considers the causes and consequences of terrorism and helps teachers to explain:
  • What terrorists do and why they do it
  • How to differentiate between the reasons, goals and methods of terrorists
  • Why the media and terrorism are inextricably linked
  • What makes terrorism start
  • What factors bring a cycle of terrorism to an end
Pupils are invited to reflect on issues, debate about issues, explore and examine issues, making it a highly interactive handbook for lively discussion.

Activities To Help Children Understand Their Feelings

A BOX FULL OF FEELINGS

A Box Full of Feelings
will help children get in touch with their inner world of feelings, recognise emotions in themselves, accept them, name them and have a more differentiated awareness of them.

A Box Full of Feelings is built around the four basic feelings of:
• Happy • Sad • Angry • Afraid.

The Box contains the basic material to get children involved in more than 20 different activities. Gradually children will learn to take perspective of others; to be aware of perceptions and emotions, to feel the impact of their actions and realise that people don't experience events in the same way. Also as the children learn to express feelings in a more appropriate way, their capacity to cope with painful experiences gets stronger, with inner calm and serenity as a result. This is even reflected at group level. The activities can be offered in a flexible way: as guided group activities, as optional activities, as part of a separate area for social-emotional development or occasionally as a response to certain events.

The impact of using the box is significant, practitioners' report:
  • How children are more alert to the utterances of feelings
  • How they use a more differentiated vocabulary concerning emotions
  • How their intuitions become more refined
  • How their role-taking capacity expands.

The box includes:
  • 48 situational pictures (11 x 11cm) – each basic feeling has 12 pictures, with a short story and questions on the reverse
  • 16 pictures of the emotion figures (11 x 11cm)
  • 4 posters with emotion figures (42 x 29.5cm)
  • 17 finger dolls
  • 4 carry-around houses of emotions
  • 4 masks depicting each feeling for children or adults to wear
  • A wheel of emotions with spinner (for games)
  • CD of emotive music
  • Instruction manual including photocopiable activities
  • Sturdy storage box with carry handle.
A Box Full of Feelings has been developed at The Research Centre for Experimental Education, Leuven University, Belgium, by Marina Kog & Julia Moons, illustrated by Ann De Bode and designed by Tine Vercruysse.
Age: 4-7.
